Political Ideology
The Constitutional Union Party was a political party in the United States active during the 1860 presidential election. It was formed by former Whigs, Know-Nothings, and other moderates who were concerned about the rising tensions between the North and South over the issue of slavery. The party’s main goal was to preserve the Union and avoid secession by downplaying the issue of slavery and focusing instead on upholding the Constitution and the laws of the country.
